News You Can Use
The partisan primary is August 9. Plan your vote now so your preferred candidate is on the ballot in November.
Our League webpage is the perfect place to find all the information you need to know about when and where to vote in the upcoming election. We applaud our La Crosse City Clerk, Nikki Elsen, for adding locations and hours to the early voting schedule to make it easier for citizens to vote this election cycle. Thanks, Nikki!
Also on our webpage is the 2022 Forums Page, the place to see what the candidates are saying. More forums will be added as they occur, so check back often.

The Board Brief

Updates from the LWV Board and President
In light of the recent Supreme Court reversal of a woman's right to abortion, the LWVLA Board unanimously passed the LWV of the United States resolution: "Be it resolved that the League of Women Voters of the La Crosse Area supports the rights of women and those who can become pregnant to self-determination related to, and including, but not limited to bodily autonomy, privacy, reproductive health, and life-style choice." While we were not surprised by the ruling of this Supreme Court, we share our disappointment with the majority of Americans who disagree with actions that take away women's rights that have been in place for 50 years.

What's On The Ballot
state treasurer
The State Treasurer is the state’s chief financial officer and serves on the State of Wisconsin Investment Board, the Public Employee Trust Fund and the Board of Commissioners of Public Lands.
As a member of the Board of Commissioners of Public Lands, the State Treasurer plays a key role in managing the state’s remaining trust lands (more than 77,000 acres of forest), managing trust funds (more than $1 billion), primarily for the benefit of public school libraries (these funds are the sole source of state funding for public school libraries), and maintains the state’s archive of 19th-century land survey and land sales records.

Why does this matter?
As the state’s chief financial officer, the State Treasurer plays a role in ensuring the financial health of our state , being responsible for signing certain checks and financial instruments and helping publicize the state’s unclaimed property program. The State Treasurer can also provide greater transparency and accountability in the state’s finances.

The role of the State Treasurer has received increased attention over the last few years after a proposed constitutional amendment to remove the office was rejected by voters in 2018. Voters decided that they wanted to keep the role of treasurer as a statewide elected office.

All participants should still register as they will receive a backup Zoom link if the outdoor venue needs to be canceled. Participants will also receive an email confirming if the outdoor location is a "go."
