2026 Partisan Primary
August 11, 2026
Voting in primary elections is important so that candidates on the November ballot are more representive of Wisconsin voters.
June 1 is the filing deadline for the August 11 Partisan Primary
Following is a list of known races (so far) for the
August Partisan Primary:
Governor (Democrats)
Lt. Governor (Republicans)
Secretary of State (Democrats and Republicans)
State Treasurer (Democrats)
U.S. House District 3 (Democrats)
(source: PBS)
FYI:
Wisconsin law stipulates that parties conduct
open primaries*
. Winners in Wisconsin primary elections are determined via plurality vote, meaning that the candidate with the highest number of votes wins even if they did not win an outright majority of votes cast.[1][2]
*An open primary is a primary election that
does not require voters to be affiliated with a political party in order to vote for partisan candidates
. In a traditional open primary, voters may select one party's ballot and vote for that party's nomination.
LWVLA Policy for Partisan Primary Forums:
Candidate forums for Wisconsin's Partisan Primaries are often hosted by partisan groups, including the political parties of registered candidates. Despite
their likely partisan content, the
La Crosse League believes sharing these forums empowers voters to make a more informed choice for candidates who will best represent them on the November ballot.
In keeping with League policy, p
lacement of forums or debates on the Candidate & Issue Information page is not an endorsement of any candidate or party.
We invite all parties with candidates on the Partisan Primary ballot
to share debates, interviews, and forums with us.
All partisan-sponsored forums will be taken down after the August 11 election.
